One small but powerful word sometimes explains the whole idea. Just as a building was built by stacking baked bricks, we decided to reinterpret the space in a classic way, such as baking and stacking, in this remodeling of the Jaws Food office building. Making bricks by baking soil was no different from cooking ingredients to make warm food. The characteristics of bricks, which are completed only with fire, matched well with the company's motto.
The problem is what to build and how to build it. We structured the process into four steps. First, the program was stacked to determine the use of each floor, and a green space was created on the balcony to create a window where nature and the building breathe. Next, soil was selected for the production of bricks, the exterior material. The reason why it was built from scratch rather than using pre-made bricks was to create an image unique to the Jaws Food office building while matching with the urban landscape. After numerous samplings, there was persistence in implementing the most desired color with soil airlifted from Italy. This time alone took 6 months. Then the work of rebuilding continued. With this remodeling, it was important to coordinate the different senses of volume and achieve unity between them, as the two neighboring buildings had to be woven into one.
CLASSIC
Among the methods of constructing a space, the method of baking and stacking materials is the oldest and most efficient way since the concept of food, clothing, and clothing was born. The client, a bigwig of the catering industry, continues to do business through the most traditional recipes. This character led the project to conventional elements. Focusing on this point, We decided to proceed in a 'classic' way, including the shape and the elements. Through the following four steps, we were able to create an efficient and high-quality result.
BRAND IDENTITY
First : Form - Stacking Once the initial form is composed by stacking program, green space added to breathe outside air.
This single architecture communicates around nature and the city with these pocket places. It is the ideal way for users to breathe and talk about sustainability.
MATERIAL
Second : selection of material – Soil
The process of making bricks by baking clay was similar to making food, the act of finding a color suits the type of business would be the best way to express the brand.
DIFFERENTATION
Third: journey for searching soil
After the method and elements were decided, the journey to find the proper soil took as long as the design period. After numerous samplings in Italy and Spain, the best quality soil(brick) made countries, finally desired colored dirt obtained. However, in the stage of realizing this, the price was not an affordable number. As an alternative, we explored China and mixed the soil to create an identical color. After that, in the process of burning bricks, with many trials and errors, we spent about 6 months on the material.
PROCESS
Fourth: stacking again
Choosing a method of stacking the finishing materials on the layered mass and program was carried out with a consistent design code from the smallest element to the largest form exposed to the outside. The brick, which was customized for this project only, was warped and deformed randomly, causing many difficulties in the construction stage. However, this was also successfully resolved through repeated deconstruction and rebuilding. Thanks to the client and design clews’ patience and consistent plan, this challenging project finally reached completion.
IMPACT
Merging each of the different buildings into a design code is hoped to be a good precedent for the rehabilitation of buildings. It suggests a form of gradually expanding while maintaining the surrounding urban scale, rather than a redevelopment method that is enlarged with a big mass.
